When to File an Auto Insurance Claim

After a car accident or unexpected damage, one of the first questions many drivers have is, should I file a claim? The answer depends on the situation.

When Filing a Claim Is the Right Move

If someone is injured, another party is involved, or the damage is significant, filing a claim is typically the right choice. Your insurance policy may provide coverage in these cases.

You should also file a claim if you relate to the following scenarios:

  • You’re not sure who was at fault
  • The other driver doesn’t have insurance
  • Your vehicle was stolen or vandalized
  • Weather or wildlife caused the damage

Your insurer can guide you through the claims process and help coordinate repair shops, rental vehicles or other next steps.

When You Might Not Need to File

If the damage is minor and only affects your vehicle, it might make more sense to pay out of pocket, especially if the repair cost is close to or below your deductible. For example, if you back into a pole and the repair will cost $450 with a $500 deductible, filing a claim wouldn’t result in any reimbursement.

You may also want to avoid filing small claims too frequently. Multiple claims in a short period can lead to higher premiums over time.
